Biography

Brian Maddox is currently a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, working toward his Ph.D in Physics. He was awarded the SEGRF fellowship at LLNL in September 2002 to conduct reasearch under the supervision of Choong-Shik Yoo at LLNL and Warren E. Pickett and Richard T. Scalettar at UC Davis. His graduate research activites include the investigation of the structural and electronic properties of transition metal oxides, half metals, and rare-earth metals at high pressures. These materials allow one to study a broad range of physical phenomenon including structural phase transitions such as the rutile-CaCl2 transition in CrO2, metal-insulator transitions like the Mott transition in MnO, and f-electron delocalization as seen in the rare-earths.

To study these phenomenon he uses a variety of experimental techniques including Raman spectroscopy, powder x-ray diffraction, X-ray Emission Spectroscopy(XES), and Resonant-Inelastic X-ray Scattering(RIXS). Brian Maddox graduted with a Bachelors Degree in Physics from California State University, Hayward in 2001 and was accepted at UC Davis the same year. He has been with the High Pressure Physics Group at LLNL since 2002. He also enjoys many hobbies including martial arts, playing music, moutain biking, and snowboarding and recieved his Private Pilot's license in October 2003.
